Ideas for my photo essay
I think that I am going to use the third choice, the narrated documentary - The photographer tells a true story using photos to illustrate the points. I'm going to do mine about either my day or over a weeks time span to try and get some more interesting things happening.

1. The staged illustration2. To me this illustration shows the fun and the fruitiness to the drink by using the glowing ice cubes.
3. I like this photo because of the fun colors in it. I think is represents the drink well just by looking at the picture of it.

Photo Illustrations
My favorite photo illustration was the one about being "Left Handed and Loving it" with Kermit the frog. I like the idea of using something out of the ordinary to show that its cool to be left handed. Using Kermit kept the cover lighthearted like the article it self. The photo of Kermit shows him with his left hand in the air indicating that he too is left handed. There were also pictures of celebrities at the bottom who were left handed and I think that that would be a good way to catch peoples attention as well as using Kermit.

Capture what you have learned
Zone Focus: Focusing on one spot where you know that a lot of action happens.
Shutter Speed: When shooting sports, you usually need a fast shutter speed with a big aperture to freeze action. If you use a medium shutter speed you will capture action rather then freezing it.
Panning: Panning is when you follow a subject that is in motion. This will allow you to use a little bit slower shutter speed then usually used so that you can adjust to the bad lighting in most gyms or night games outside. Also, this will keep the subject in focus and the background blurred.
Waiting for the Pause: When waiting for the pause you are simply waiting for the change in action. An example would be when a soccer player is running towards the goal one way and the other team gets the ball so he has to stop to turn and run the other way.

My favorite photo was number 9. I like how the photographer used a long shutter speed to get the blur of the car tail lights and the brightness of the lights on the building. This photo shows the lighting of the building along with the shapes and surroundings. The building is very unique and I think that this photo does a good job at bringing out the beautiful architecture.

What the judges have to say
Melissa Golden
Her story was about Senior citizens
Photojournalism
Problems:
Not many of the pictures stood out.
They have seen the story before.
There was really only one good portrait.
What they liked:
She captured a good portrait.
She got action with the softball photo.
My impression:
I liked the photo story more then the random pictures at the beginning. The photo story had nicer photographs and she attempted to used better techniques like lighting in those photos. In the beginning photos she failed to use many techniques.
Josh Birnbahm
His story was about the wheel chair basketball
Mostly sports
Problems:
Used bad angles.
The shots had potential but he didn't wait for the moments.
All were secondary pictures, nothing was strong.
Things they liked:
He caught the moment with the soccer picture.
He used good lighting in a few pictures that had good faces in them.
My impression:
I liked that alot of his photos had emotion in them and he caught some of the people at a good time to show how they were really feeling. But, some of his photos just weren't that great. I didn't like them at all. Some were boring and lame.

The photos don't say anything, you have to read the long caption to understand it.
He cut of too much of the heads in multiple pictures.
They are really tired of kids in the photos.
What they liked:
The photos were mostly good graphically even though some weren't photojournalism.
The way he used silhouettes.
My impression:
I liked a lot of the techniques he used like the silhouettes. One of his pictures would be really boring while the next would be really busy.

There weren't enough strong singles.
The whole story was dark except for a select few.
What they liked:
Good graphics.
She used good a good background with the pastel colors.
My impression:
Her story was pretty dark and I didn't enjoy that. She only two pictures that I really liked and the rest were just kind of boring.
The Winning Story
Strengths:
He was right up there with the athletes in the photos. He captured photos where everyone was doing something
Weaknesses:
There were not many weaknesses. One thing they did say though was that two of the pictures were very similar, just done with another sport.
Deciding the winner:
The judges simply picked out the portfolios that had bad pictures in them. The winner had no bad pictures in it.
I agree with the judges on the picture of the sumo wrestler on the escalator because I like the photo too. I think that the photographer caught a good moment with the ladies reaction

Langston Hughes Poems
I read for twenty seven minutes. This was my favorite poem of his.
Merry-Go-Round
Where is the Jim Crow section
On this merry-go-round,
Mister, cause I want to ride?
Down South where I come from
White and colored
Can't sit side by side.
Down South on the train
There's a Jim Crow car.
On the bus we're put in the back—
But there ain't no back
To a merry-go-round!
Where's the horse
For a kid that's black?

This was my favorite photo by Parks. To me this is an enviromental portrait. This man is begging for money or anything else he can get. His life is lived on the street and doing what he can to survive and I think that this picture shows that. This man doesnt look particularly happy about having to beg but I do think that he is showing emotion with his music and is really into the music. The lighting creates shadows on his face showing his ageing as well.

In the issue, Lauper discusses her songwriting and recounts her trip to the U.S.S.R. with a group of American songwriters the previous year to collaborate with Soviet counterparts. They produced the song “Cold Sky,” which appears on the album Action Speaks Louder Than Words.
In this cover photo of Cyndi Lauper she has her Hollywood look. He pale skin flows with her bleach blonde hair. The title of the magazine is also with that same flowing, relaxed look that she has. She looks layed back but still glamorous

Early Magazines were without photographs and with no text or any sort of headline. There were some pictures but they were general drawings. A common thing among early magazines was to have the table of contents serve as the cover. That was all of the text on the cover. Also the titles weren't flashy and big like they are today.
2. The Poster Cover
The poster cover focused on having a large photo and picture with little text and only a title. The photo would usually take up the entire over sized page. The only print would generally be little and at the very bottom in unused space.
3. Pictures Married to Type
In pictures married to type the type began to go with the picture when before the picture would most of the time have nothing to do with what was actually in the magazine. The shape of the type would be similar to the photo. The title got larger and began to overlap with the photo. The type would usually be in a side bar along the photo or the subject in the photo.
4. In the Forest of Words
The modern magazine cover known as a forest of words is how the majority of covers are done today. Headlines and type over almost all of the page. The subject merges with the title and you can find type covering most of their body. My favorite portrait
I really like this picture of The Grateful Dead because of the serene looks on their faces. Their music really was about love for one another and I think that this picture does a good job of showing that. The picture is also pretty simple. It has lines in the back the guide your eye across the picture too. For me personally I want to do something similar with my photos. Really show what someone is about and have their personality show though the photo.

Fashion Ethics
The models face was changed in many ways including:
-Her eyes were made larger
-Her neck was lengthened
-Her eye brows were raised
-Reshaped her head and neck
-Made her lips more plump
-Her acne was covered even more then the make-up could do
All of these changes were unethical. That's not what the women looks like at all. By the end, it hardly resembled her at all. By doing this, girls are taught their whole life that that's what your suppose to look like when its unrealistic. It makes girls feel ugly when they really aren't.
I think that all situations are unethical. Sometimes they don't alter the woman's appearance that much and its not as bad but its still wrong.
I think that all changes are wrong and shouldn't be done. I personally have felt bad about myself because of photos like that. You just shouldn't make her into a plastic barbie look.

They are linked though because they both effect people. People see these photos and they change that person and its not right to be lied to. They are two different industries so they aren't going to follow the same rules. One is obviously going to be more ethical then the other.

Photojournalism Ethics
I think that a photojournalists ethics should be absolute. Photojournalists jobs are to give the truth to the people through photos and if you are changing a photo even in the slightest you are lying to the people. Some people rely on photos of Iraq to inform them about the news and if the photojournalist changes the photo then people are going to be lied to and start thinking differently about the world.
I believe that a photo can capture truth because people are often not believed when they are actually telling the truth and a photo can be the one thing that helps them out. But on the other hand, a true photo can easily be interpreted differently then the truth so its not always helpful.
The only editing I have done has been fixing scratches and spots with little editing of the levels. I believe that i haven't edited the reality though by doing that.

Ethical and Unethical
The story is about a supposed "diverse" campus that had to photo shop the head of a black man into the pictures for their brochures. I think that they crossed the line with this. If their campus is so diverse then they could have found a picture that had both black and white people in it with school spirit. They didn't do it to make the picture more appealing they did it to make the school look better when it was a lie.
Out of the given photos, I found this the most unethical. The African American man was photo shopped in and that's just not right. They are lying to everyone who looks at the picture. If their campus is so diverse then they can find a picture that shows that.
This photo was the least unethical of the group of photos. Yes, they did change reality a little bit but they didn't do it to hurt someone or to make the people who made the magazine look better. They simply did it to accommodate the photo to the cover. I still think its a bit unethical though because they did change how the mountains actually are.

Captions
Twenty three year old John Smith of San Francisco is fed up with gas prices where the gas prices are an average of $3.25. Gas prices have been reaching highs all over the world and are nearly a dollar more then they were in the US last year this time.
Two year old tabby cat, Simba, finally gets his ice cream before dinner. His owner Pat Knapper said that hes been begging for his ice cream ever since he had it taken away as a kitten as a punishment for pulling the curtains down.
Kittens Adeline and Thomas of Austin Texas finally fall asleep at five in the morning after a long night of partying. Austin is famous for Sixth Street which is known for partying into the wee hours of the morning. Adeline and Thomas were spotted there many times last night.
